I love the beach. I like to walk on the beach and morning walks are great. Imagine as your are walking along a wonderful smell starts wafting by you in the breeze. It smells like fish, and toast, and fire all mingled together. Your stomach starts to growl as you are now pretty hungry since you've been walking for awhile. You start walking a little faster so that you can find out where that wonderful smell is coming from. You arrive at the place and you are pleasantly surprised and a bit overwhelmed. Your best friend who you haven't seen in awhile and whom you did not expect to see has made you breakfast at your favorite spot and is waiting for you to enjoy the meal with him. (He knew you would be walking on the beach and walk past this way!) He invites you to sit down and fixes you a plate. Then he asks, "What are your plans for the day?"<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have been reading through the message Bible and I recently read the last chapter of John. I'm sure everyone knows the story and I have read it in the past. There are many analogies and lessons that can be taken from this story. For some reason, this last time I read it, the story has replayed in my mind over and over again. I imagine it at night after a day of work and Jesus says to me, "How was your day?" He knows what I like and where I will be when. He knows what I need and when I need it. He always makes things special. Wouldn't you love to have a wonderful chat with your friend on the beach over a campfire meal? The beauty of it all is, I can and do have that relationship with Jesus. I tell Him what my plans are for the day and how my day went. He listens and cares and He helps me. One day, I hope to enjoy that meal on the beach with Jesus for real. Would you like to join us? It will be wonderful! In the meantime, when I am discouraged, I start to take a walk along the beach in my mind and Jesus is waiting for me by the campfire. He says to me, "Sit down and have some food. Tell me all about it. I can help..."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
P.S. After proof reading this something else came to my mind. I have a dear friend who I used to chat with a lot about spiritual things. I remember her telling me an image that she carried with her about Jesus cooking a meal for her but hers was a kitchen setting. She used to work in a restaurant!:> Perhaps this is where these images came from in my mind, but either way, God uses the things we enjoy and can relate to (me, the beach, my friend a kitchen restaurant) to help us to understand how much he loves us and wants to be included in our lives and to help us. I have also been reading Brother Lawrence's book, "Practicing the Presence of God". I think these images that we carry in our minds of Jesus also help us to "practice the presence of God." I hope you are filling your mind today with the images of God and experiencing His presence in your life.<br /><br /></div>

I Love Christmas trees. I like to see how people decorate them. I like white ones, flocked ones, fake ones, real ones, short ones, fat ones, and even steel ones! Pink ones, white ones, green ones, blues ones, gold ones, silver ones, and even teal ones! I like lights that are colored and lights that are white; lights that are blue, and lights in the night. There is nothing like the glow of a Christmas tree that spreads throughout the room and brings a smile to your face. I hope you are enjoying your tree this Christmas season.<br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

I wanted to do it, but really didn't know how to go about it. I looked into it in GA and was going to volunteer for a christian organization that was similar to Goodwill, but quite honestly, I never got around to it. Then the move happened and life was in such chaos, that I just didn't think that I could do it with everything else. Well, the "nudging" never really stopped so one day I started looking online for something that I could do. I found 2 organizations that interested me. One is called, <a href="http://www.birthrightofcolumbia.org/" target="_blank">"Birthright of Columbia"</a> and one is called, <a href="http://www.birthrightofcolumbia.org/" target="_blank">"Learning Ally"</a>. The need for Birthright was for baby booties or office work. I could do both, and would enjoy both. The Learning Ally is books for the blind or dyslexic and since I love books this one really interested me. I inquired about both. The Learning Ally would be making recordings of books. I would love to do this, but I will have to invest in a pair of headphones with a USB port before I can try it. I didn't hear anything back from the first, but thought I better try out making a pair of booties before I give them away! I used to crochet many years ago, but hadn't done it in a long while. Conveniently, my crochet hooks were in a box that was accessible (still trying to find things from the move!) so I took them out and bought some yarn. I am a big pinterest fan and loved all the beautiful booties I had seen there. I found a few free patterns online and got busy. Had a few mistakes, and I was a bit rusty, but just like riding a bike, it came back to me:> I dropped my first attempts off 2 weeks ago and learned a little bit more about the needs of this organization. The person I left a message for did return my call. I will hopefully be able to learn a little bit more when I take my next batch in. <br />

I have to say, I'm a bit discouraged about not having a nice Goodwill near my new house. When we lived in GA, the Goodwill's were the best I have ever found. They always had great things and the prices were very reasonable. If I were still there, when I needed a desk, I would just pop in and low and behold we could find something that would work. Unfortunately, in SC this is not the case. When we moved back here we needed a desk for the library/office. I was unable to find one in the thrift stores so I ended up getting one at an antique store. It looked great and I was excited, but when I got it home, it wasn't as big as I thought and didn't look right in the place I was going to put it. So, I thought I would try to sell it on Craig's list and start over. The offers that came in were almost all scams so after giving it a month, I decided that the desk was here to stay. I moved it to a different place and it looked pretty good there. Then there was a new problem. I was originally just going to use the wingback chairs that we already had for the desk. They were not the right size and didn't look right. So, off I go again to the thrift stores to look for a desk chair! We do happen to have a thrift store that has an abundance of office chairs and most of them are only $5. Em bought one earlier in the summer and did a great job fixing it up ( you can check out her blog to see it; you can find a link to it in my sidebar:>). Mike has a real gift of finding things I just don't see, and once again he came through! We had checked out all of the chairs and didn't find anything, and then Mike called me over to a back room and showed me a chair that was behind some other ones. It was perfect and only $5. We loaded it up and took it home. In the midst of a garage redo (yes, my life is still in upheaval from moving; will it ever end?!) we ripped it apart, repainted it, and recovered it. I thought I would be able to use some of the fabric that I had from previous Goodwill trips, but none of them really seemed to fit the color scheme I was going for, so I found a lovely print at Hobby Lobby. It cost more then I wanted to spend for it, but, hey sometimes you just have to splurge, right?! It only cost about $12 so I think it was worth it. I already had the paint on hand, so the chair cost about $17.00 when all was said and done. Now it's a lovely place for the two teacher's currently living here to work:> Here's a few pics:<br />

When I last posted, I was painting the trim in the old "new" house. All of the trim has been finally finished. It looks nice, but oh my what a huge task it was! Once the inside painting was finished the next chore to tackle was the garage. What a job. The family that rented our home kept a dog in my garage. I was unaware of the horrible odor that awaited us when we returned to the house. It has taken me over 16 months to eliminate the odor, a great deal of time, effort, money, and headaches (literally and figuratively!) We of course immediately cleaned the garage with every possible kind of cleaner you can imagine. It helped, but the odor lingered on. We then had the walls painted by a professional (supposedly, but it wasn't done very well) and we treated the floor to another epoxy coating. We took off the rubber gasket to the garage door. We used air fresheners (many different kinds!). We replaced the moldy wall caused by a broken water heater. (replaced the water heater as well.) Removed the utility sink and had the pipes looked at as they appeared to be leaking, and removed the wood cabinet next to the utility sink that appeared to be rotted due to the leaky pipes. All this was done in order to put the house on the market. While the smell was better, I still was not satisfied, but since I was not going to live here, I decided I had done the best I could do. Besides, the only one that was really bothered by the odor was me! Well, when the decision was made to move back here, I immediately started to pray about how we could eliminate this odor (and the one under the kitchen sink, but that's a whole other story!). God was either going to have to eliminate it for me, help me not to be bothered by it, or help us find a way to get rid of it. Well, it did not miraculously disappear, I was still bothered by it, and the only option left was to somehow fix it. Soooo, All the trim was sanded and painted, every possible surface was primed with a shellacked (Zinser primer, supposed to block odors and stains), all the surfaces were repainted, the ceiling was repainted, and the floor was again painted with epoxy paint and a clear coat on top. We put the clear coat on top this weekend and the major work has finally been completed. It has been a long, discouraging, tearful, and exhausting ordeal but I believe...THE ODOR APPEARS TO BE GONE!!!!!!!!<br />

Newsflash! You can go home again:> The dust has finally settled on decision making and the Lord guided us to where we are going to be in the coming year. While it took 6 months of waiting, trusting and praying, it took only a few weeks for the Lord to answer all those prayers. Our house in Georgia sold very quickly so it was clear that Georgia would not be where we would settle. Closing should be Monday if all goes well. We moved back to our "family homestead" in Columbia. We originally rented the house out for a year and half. If you recall a previous post, about a year ago around this time, we were trying to get the house usable once again after the renters moved out. It was quite a disaster and unfortunately we ended up working on it up until November of last year. We put it on the market, fully expecting to have to sell it so that we could stay in Georgia, but God had other plans! The house never sold, and truth be told I was secretly thankful that it didn't. I was having a hard time letting it go and I know if it sold it would be very emotional for me. This house was a special gift to us long ago when we were very young and we moved into it when Josh was just a year and a half. Emily was born here and lived here most of her life, and there were a lot of happy and sad memories we shared together in this place. Mike and I really grew up here together and while I realize it is just a place, and "home is where the heart is" it really is the only place that we consider our home. When we received the house I dedicated it to God and asked that he would use it as a blessing to us as well as to all that spent time here and that we would use it for God's glory. I can truly say that our home has been a place of refuge for not only our family, but several others as well. As we move back into it, I pray that it would continue to be used for God's glory. We are still "working on it". When you own a home, are you ever done fixing it up, changing it, or adding to it? I don't know if it's just us, but we always find something that needs to be done with the old place. Enough about where we will be living, what will we be doing? Mike accepted a job at Northside Christian Academy in Lexington, SC. Yes, that is correct, only a small drive up the rode from our home. I wish I had the time and place to explain all that God did to orchestrate our being here, but suffice it to say for now, we can clearly see God's hand, guidance, and direction, and know without doubt that this is where we are to be this year. Mike is excited for the opportunity to minister at this wonderful new school where God is glorified and honored. He will be teaching computer and science this year. Emily will also be working at the very same school! Yes, it is amazing. She will be at the same school as her dad once again, but this time not as a student, but as a teacher! She is excited about her first year of teaching and is looking forward to getting to know all her new 4th grade students. What will I be doing? I'm not sure yet. We actually moved all our stuff to the house not this weekend but last. I have not even begun to unpack as I was trying to get all the trim painted in the house first. It was a massive undertaking but today we put the last coat of white paint on the bathroom and boy am I glad. I do still have the garage to paint, but since all our stuff is in there right now, the garage will be put on hold until I can find the walls again. I will be unpacking for awhile and trying to get us all settled back in. I am praying about future opportunities and am still waiting on the Lord to hear where he wants me to be. For now, it is putting our house back in order. And last, but certainly not least, an update on our favorite portlanders. Josh and Alli purchased a home and will hopefully be moving by the end of August. We are so excited for them. The house is a wonderful old home in town and we know that it is just the perfect place for them. Josh is doing great at his photography company. His company is growing by leaps and bounds, he received a company car, and will be getting a phone to use for work. He travels a lot and has been working on the yearbook for schools part of the company as well as many other responsibilities. We are thankful that God provided him with a job that he enjoys doing so much. Alli has been working in a coffee shop (coffee is life support for Portland people!) She has a flower business as well as an Etsy shop and has exciting plans ahead for her in the future. They are both busy with church, they are avid Timber fans, and throw in an occasional camping trip for fun. We are hoping to be able to go out and visit them soon. For all of you who prayed, thank you! We love you and appreciate you caring enough to lift us up in prayer! We hope that our answered prayers are an encouragement to you. Blessings!<br />

Typical for the Schreck clan, it appears the Lord has a new adventure ahead of us once again:> We were in the process of selling our house in SC. We are now in the process of selling our house in GA and moving back to our house in SC! I know, it's hard to keep up with, even for us! It seems our time at GCA was ended and now the Lord has a new place in store for us to minister, although we are not sure where that will be at this very moment. Needless to say, the Lord has been teaching me in the last 6 months these concepts from the Bible: Wait. Trust. Help is on the way, an answer is coming, everything will work out. The only one who is all powerful is also merciful. Fear not. Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid, friend. Peace. Everything will be all right. Deliverer "taken from one place to another". Little did I know when the Lord started impressing and speaking these words into my life, how much I would need them and depend on them in the months ahead. I lost my sweet Bear in March, went on a mission trip to Jamaica, Lost a dear colleague to cancer, Mike's job was not renewed due to a lack of funding, sickness, Emily graduating, and our old house not selling, putting our new house on the market, moving again after only 1 1/2 years. Needless to say, it has been another period of extreme highs and extreme lows, but God... He is sustaining me and helping me to get through this time. I have also read a book (many times now:>) Entitled the "Red Sea Rules". I can not express how much this book has meant to me. 10 truths that have kept me from going over the edge during this difficult time are explained in this tiny little book. They have been invaluable and even the timing of receiving this book was no coincidence. Please pray with us as we start a new adventure once again! More to come in the days ahead...Debbie Schreckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01139519020065500503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5218135618759838823.post-17591240339439038552012-03-09T08:47:00.002-05:002012-03-09T08:48:19.938-05:00"Game On"Came across this video while reading yahoo news. I have a few new addictions to confess: ottomans, settees, craigslist, and pinterest. I search craigslist for free stuff, ottomans, and settees. I recently purchased an ottoman and settee from craigslist. The ottoman was from a store in Villa Rica. So my longsuffering husband drove me an hour away last Saturday to the small town of Villa Rica where we spent a lovely morning perusing the antique shops there. I picked up my great deal ottoman and Mike purchased a set of hardback Winnie the Pooh books that were published the year he was born (my husband is very sentimental and also suffers a few addictions of his own, one of which is that he can never resist buying a book) I love my ottoman and am trying to decide what fabric to reupholster it in. Yesterday, I purchased my first antique settee from craigslist. While I like it alot, it will need a lot of work. I am a bit concerned because it needs its coils replaced. Mike has assured me that he thinks he can handle that part) We will see. I was also supposed to purchase another one that was finished and had beautiful lines. Unfortunately, the person sold it yesterday afternoon to someone else before I had a chance to go get it. I am soooooo disappointed, but realize that part of the fun is the hunt, so the hunt will continue (fun for me but not so great on the pocketbook!) I think I will have to stop looking for ottomans, although I love the old giant round ones, so you never know!<br />
While in Villa Rica we stopped at a store that left me speechless. It was so crammed full of stuff that I deemed it the "hoarding store". It had anything you could possibly imagine. Unfortunately it appeared to be going out of business. Because I found it so fascinating I had to take some pictures so here they are:<br />

I do. Sometimes one of the tunes will float through my head and I start to try to sing them, and I have forgotten the words. That makes me sad. Some of those hymns were great reminders of the faithfulness of God, and reiterated the doctrines that we were learning in church. Don't get me wrong. I do enjoy the modern worships songs and the more contemporary music, but there is just something about the old hymns that is special. While I was having devotions today, the hymn, "Break Thou the Bread of Life" entered my head. I started to try to sing it, but couldn't remember the words, just the tune. I really felt like the Lord was trying to talk to me through this hymn, so I went online to try to find the words. I found <a href="http://cyberhymnal.org/" target="_blank">cyber hymnal</a> and found the words and the music. The Lord has given me several words lately to help me get through some of our current circumstances and today he gave me the words from Daniel in the Message. It is from Daniel 10:18 and it is spoken by the angel to Daniel. Daniel is seeing the angel and is scared stiff. The angels words were, "Don't be afraid, friend. Peace. Everything is going to be all right. Take courage. Be strong." These are along the same lines as the words the Lord gave me on the first Sunday of the New year. Clearly, it is a truth that the Lord wants me to grasp a hold of. Are you struggling with difficult circumstances or wondering what in the world the Lord is doing with your life? Maybe these words are meant for you as well!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
Break Thou the bread of life, dear Lord, to me, </div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
As Thou didst break the loaves beside the sea;</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
Beyond the sacred page I seek Thee, Lord;</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
My spirit pants for Thee, O living Word.</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
Bless Thou the truth, dear Lord, to me, to me,</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
As Thou didst bless the bread by Galilee;</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
Then shall all bondage cease, all fetters fall;</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
And I shall find my peace, my all in all.</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
Thou art the bread of life, O Lord, to me,</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
Thy holy Word the truth that saveth me;</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
Give me to eat and live with Thee above;</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
Teach me to love Thy truth, for Thou art love.</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
O send Thy Spirit, Lord, now unto me,</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
That He may touch my eyes, and make me see:</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
Show me the truth concealed within Thy Word,</div>
<div style="font-family: serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left;">
And in Thy Book revealed I see the Lord.</div>

The picture is from our trip over Christmas to Blue Springs State Park in Florida. We went with the Beates family to see the amazing Manatees that frequent this area. It was a wonderful trip, and they do have a live streaming feed if you would like to investigate it. Heres the website: <a href="http://www.floridastateparks.org/bluespring/" target="_blank">http://www.floridastateparks.org/bluespring/</a> What's new for the new year? I don't know but I'm sure it will be full of exciting new adventures. Sometimes that scares me as it is always difficult not to know what the future holds. Sometimes it excites me because since you don't know, it could be something really amazing! Whatever it does hold, I do know that the Lord will be with us through whatever we may face. We finally finished working on the house in Columbia. Now we are just waiting for it to sell. It was a lot of hard work and some discouraging situations along the way, but it is a relief to be done and we hope some new family will enjoy it as much as we have. I didn't get to many pictures, but here is one with the new tile.<br />

She has a lot going on and wanted to take pictures and blog about a craft but asked me to do it instead so here goes.......<br />

45 magnets and paper bags later we are wishing all the GCA little ones a Merry Christmas! What do you get 45 elementary schoolers when you would love for the gift to be free? 45 is a big number and a lot of presents! It must also be nice because, "When it's free, it must be perfect!"<br />

<br />
This was all a great idea in theory until you run out of ink. Being the creative educators we are, we improvised! We printed the patterns in black and white and colored them.<br />
<br />
This wasn't the only thing we used up. With only a handful of the magnets left to run through our xylon machine, we ran out of the magnet cartridge. Let me just tell you, it was quite humorous. Mom and I were in the basement pulling as hard as we could to get all the magnet we possibly could! "Waste not, leave not." Well, we still had to make a trip to Hobby Lobby. It was almost free! Purchasing a less than $3 strip of sticky magnet and we could finally finish! We thought......<br />
<br />
We were almost done and mom realized there were two birthday magnet smileys. That could not do because these are Christmas presents, so we had to salvage the magnet (because we used a majority of the recently purchased magnet strip) and print two more pictures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbI6k53Y-kiMVXFKDpnltJHDWpahpcayxWKDe5gHgTOC86gmV7ehyphenhyphenX3oEZQOZaVseZfDI3xyfTkVBcGi-kZF8WCC-EInGTekw-xpilwO6PFemR5XEXIiIlUx3Eac-E59_cLEXJqWft3Z1y/s1600/DSCN2335.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbI6k53Y-kiMVXFKDpnltJHDWpahpcayxWKDe5gHgTOC86gmV7ehyphenhyphenX3oEZQOZaVseZfDI3xyfTkVBcGi-kZF8WCC-EInGTekw-xpilwO6PFemR5XEXIiIlUx3Eac-E59_cLEXJqWft3Z1y/s320/DSCN2335.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Mom had the idea to attach brads to each of the bags to keep them shut along with the gift tag explaining the gift and we finally finished! The above picture shows the brad in the star of the tree.<br />
<br />
It was quite the project! We were happy with it in the end, after all....it was almost free!<br />

I am finding it more difficult to keep up with all the changing technology. Hopefully, this will improve things and not make them more complicated. The last post was done by Emily, so it has been a really long time since I have kept up. Thanksgiving has come and gone and now we are into December with all of the Christmas "stuff" that happens. I have been busy working on our house in Columbia. In fact, it should be done this weekend! Mike is busy working away at our "punch list". We are praying that it will sell quickly and we can start moving on from our past in Columbia. While we have many, many fond memories of our time in that house, it is definitely time to start making new memories! Please pray with us that it will sell soon. Today I watched one of my most favorite Christmas movies, "It's A Wonderful Life". I alway want to see it year after year, and I fear my family gets tired of it. It is old, black and white, and long. I agree, but even with all that going against it, there is just something amazing about the movie that makes me want to see it over and over again. In fact, I alway seem to shed a tear or two, even though I know what will happen. It really is a remarkable story about how everyones life is valuable and important, how much we impact each other's lives, and how even when we are at our lowest point, God hears our prayers and sends help (okay, not always in the form of Clarence Oddbody, but in some way!) How can anyone not enjoy that? Also, I love that it is a period piece and enjoy the clothes, sets, and scenery of the time. Here is a clip for your enjoyment. I sure hope you get an opportunity to watch it again this year, like I did! Merry Christmas!<br />

</tbody></table>I have a lot of jewelry. Most of it is not valuable, but I wear jewelry alot and even though I have a lot, I find myself looking for more! I used to have it in plastic boxes, but the necklaces would get tangled and it was difficult to find just what I was looking for. Sooo, I found some jewelry holder ideas online and decided to make a few of my own. Of course, I found some supplies at the Goodwill. One small picture frame to use for the post earrings, one long picture frame to use for the hanging pieces, and a canvas to use for the pins. While I was at Goodwill, I also found some amazing things to use as jewelry holders. I think the one is a cd case but it now houses all my hanging earrings. I found 4 other metal things ( I don't know what they are supposed to be!) and they are holding my scarves, and silver and gold necklaces. I hung several of these jewelry/scarf holders on the wall. The one that I made for my necklaces was to heavy so it currently resides on a shelf in my closet. I feel like I could hang it up, if I got Mike to do it, but it's fine where it is for now. I also still need to hang up the pin one. <div><br />
</div><div>Post earring holder: Took out picture and glass from the frame. Stapled window screen to the frame. Trimmed the frame edge with some black leather flower trim. Put the earrings in!</div><div><br />
</div><div>Peg board holder: Took out picture and glass from frame. Cut peg board to fit inside the frame. Painted the peg board black. Found two decorative knobs and a handle and screwed them to the board. Hung bracelets on the knobs and necklacees on the handle. Also used a few pegboard hooks for the rings and extra necklaces. The little plastic container holds necklace pieces that didn't fit on chains. This box used to hold nails. I used goo gone to get rid of the label. Washed it up. Punched two holes in it. Used gold brads that I painted silver to hold it in place on the peg board. </div><div><br />

A nip in the air but sunny. I am ready for pumpkins, baking, fires, and candles burning. This year I would like to attempt carving a pumpkin. I will save that for a later post. Life has been busy with traveling to Columbia, as well as the mundane of everyday life, such as grocery shopping (one of my least favorite things to do), cleaning house, yardwork, etc. The house in Columbia is coming along very slowly. We painted the garage floor and closed the pool down this weekend. I do believe that the garage finally smells better so that was encouraging. I think the cool air probably helps as well. Mike will go it alone this weekend, putting insulation under the house, repairng drywall, and fixing leaking pipes that occurred under the sink last week. Seems like water, water everywhere sure has been the cause of much demolition and expense. We picked out a tile to do in the kitchen and now we just have to wait and see if the floor guy thinks we can spare the wooden floors or not. If not, we will have to tile the dining room and entry way. A lot of work, but I think it will look nice in the end. We will also probably have to tear up all the laminate floors in order to lay the carpet down. It is exhausting to think about but I keep reminding myself that it has to end sometime, right? Had a great birthday on Thursday. All the kids at school sang happy birthday, I got a few hand made cards, and the best part was going to see "Wicked" at the Fox theater with my wonderful husband. We had a good time out together. We haven't been able to do that so much anymore because of all our house issues so it was a nice treat. Here are a few pics to share of this and that:<br />

Apparently, in the two weeks that we were gone, a small leak in the refrigerator water tube created major water damage in the house. The kitchen floor feels like a sponge when you walk across it, and the beautiful hardwood floors in the dining room and foyer are now buckled and black with water damage. I fear that it also carried through to the living room and hallway. We called the insurance company at 10:30 at night to report a claim and discovered that the agent would not come out to look at the problem until Monday or 3-5 business days. We are quit concerned that more damage will occur as we wait out the insurance agent, however, there isn't much else we can do, so we are waiting to see what will come of it. It is difficult to find the positive in all of this, however I know there is some. We will now get new floors and paint the kitchen. I'm sure all of this will help to sell the house in the long run. It just seems like whenever we take a step forward, we manage to have to take several steps backwards. But, being God's children, we know that there are no such things as accidents in the big picture of life. Nothing is a surprise to God, and somehow all of this has purpose and meaning, even if I can't see it or find it in the present. So, we wait and see. In the meantime, we came home, went to church, Goodwill, found a Nissan dealership close to home so we can now take the car to be fixed, and managed to clean up all the flower pots and bird feeder and put them away. They had been sitting on my driveway since the summer trip we took to Columbia. It's nice to have the driveway back again. We also put up the birdfeeder and found a birdfeeder sock for the finches so hopefully they will eat that instead of my zinnias! We cleaned off the deck and transplanted the lemon balm and portulaca.All in all it was an extremely productive weekend. <br />

It was a complicated process at the last minute, as all real estate deals I have had experience with tend to be, but it is gone, a nice missionary lady lives there, and we are happy to move on from the project. Now, if we could just get the Springs Ct. house ready to sell, our final link to Columbia will be broken and we can devote ourselves whole heartedly to the tasks ahead, whatever they may be. Mike got his annual first week back at school cold and passed it on to me. I hope next year we can prevent it by dousing ourselves in emrgen C two weeks in advance. The garden is drawing to a close. It is still beautiful, but plants are starting to show signs of the end of summer. I have greatly enjoyed my "bigger then a square foot, square foot garden". The hummingbirds are such a delight to me. They squeak, are very friendly, and seem like pets. We have had squirrels, a chipmunk, a giant fat green worm, doves, chickadees, titmouse, yellow finches, cardinals, many other birds I have yet to identify correctly, a praying mantis, and butterflies. The garden is on a high deck and I find it odd that so many creatures have found their way to it, but I guess if you plant it, they will come! It has been a quiet retreat to commune with God, rest, and enjoy the beauty of nature all around. It has been a blessing! I had my first computer classes yesterday. I think my classroom management plan will work well for all classes, except perhaps the first grade. They have computer at the end of the day, and bless their little hearts, they were thirsty, tired, and grouchy. Not sure how that is going to work out for them. I will need a lot of patience and understanding!Debbie Schreckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01139519020065500503noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5218135618759838823.post-55526436403683614292011-08-01T08:43:00.002-04:002011-08-01T08:43:51.702-04:00A little Paradise "Knee Deep"<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/vd1rkewR1_0" width="560"></iframe>Debbie Schreckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01139519020065500503noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5218135618759838823.post-78335707011542024022011-07-18T08:22:00.000-04:002011-07-18T08:22:42.298-04:00I get by with a little help from my friendsWhere have I been? Columbia, SC. I have had to take time away from my Goodwill projects and gardening to fix up my home in Columbia. We had people renting it and they moved out the end of June. Unfortunately, it was left in a terrible state, and we have been working hard to get it back up to its former glory in order to put it on the market. This is not an easy task and it has been inhibited by various other issues. I could go on and on about the problems and issues, but instead I think I would just like to thank all those who have helped us out these last two weeks. Here it is:<br />

</tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">On the first day at Mitchelville Beach, Em and I saw all the Pelicans gathered together at the end of a sandbar way out in the ocean. We tried to make our way out there, but we were a bit concerned that with so many of them, they might attack us. So we made it halfway and turned back. Fortified with my big, strong husband, the fear dissipated and we trekked our way out to the point. As soon as we got to close, they all flew to the other sandbar. I guess they were more afraid of us then we were of them. Anyway, I was fascinated by them and took way to many pelican pictures, but here are a few I wanted to share. It was another glorious day at the beach!</div>Debbie Schreckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01139519020065500503noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5218135618759838823.post-61777198169635360322011-06-26T16:20:00.001-04:002011-06-26T16:21:57.974-04:00MuckingI have left the state of Georgia for a brief time in order to enjoy some fun in the sun at the beach in Hilton Head Island, SC. I have been blessed with the opportunity for a free place to stay and spent the weekend with Emily at my favorite beach in Hilton Head. It is Mitchellville Beach and probably not known to many people. I have never used the word "crowded" to describe this beach. It is not your typical tourist beach. It is more natural and wild and when the tide is out you have opportunity to walk way out into the ocean. It is one of my most favorite places to spend time and I have found many interesting things there. Yesterday, while walking close to the rocks and grass, it appeared as if the whole earth was moving. What was moving was a massive amount of crabs moving away from us as we got closer. It was an amazing sight and sound. While going out into the ocean when they tide goes out, we do tend to get a little dirty. Thus the term, "mucking". You can get your feet stuck in something that appears to be a mixture of mud and sand. While it is not the most pleasant sensation, it does wash off and I always look at it like a free mud treatment for my feet! I always feel at peace and rested at the beach. I love to look at the ocean, feel the warm sand, take a nap, or just read a good book while catching a few rays. Here are a few pics from our trip yesterday. Thanks Em, for the fun time!<br />

The footstool was courtesy of Craigslist; a $15.00 splurge. The cover for it was a Goodwill purchase. I can't remember the price but it had to have been under $5.00. It was an evolution because I started out making a slipcover with a skirt. When I finished, I really didn't care for the skirt part, so I proceeded to rip off the skirt. I really liked it better with just the top covered and being able to see the wood work. Sooo, while the project was much more complicated then it needed to be, I liked it better<br />
with just the cushion covered. As I always say, "less is more". I should have followed my own rule to begin with! <br />

I had a round table that Grandpa Schreck had made that had a grey cover with it. I love the round table. It's a great size but the cover didn't match the "red room". So, went to Goodwill and bought a white queen sheet for 2 or 3 dollars. I used the original cover to make the new white one. Also purchased a lovely bright red table cover that Em picked out at the Goodwill to go over top of it. That only needed a hem on two sides of it. It fit perfectly in the alcove. I have also purchased two chairs that I want to put in the alcove with the table, but they will have to be recovered. I haven't found fabric for them yet, so that will be a later project. Here's the finished product:<br />
